Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. 

It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Canvas quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. 

LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Canvas quizzes that require LockDown Browser. It should not be used in other areas of Canvas.

The following information provides guidance on how to install Stanly Community College's version of Respondus LockDown Browser on your device.  

Since this is a third-party product, our technical assistance here at Stanly Community College is limited with this product.  If technical assistance is needed, the best option would be to contact Respondus directly by submitting a Support Ticket.

Windows and Mac Users - Classic Quiz in Canvas

Step 1: Navigate to the course in Canvas and then to the quiz that requires Respondus LockDown Browser. Click Take the Quiz.

Step 2:Download Respondus LockDown Browser by clicking Download Respondus LockDown Browser. 

Step 3: You will be redirected to an installation page where you will see version/system information as well as system requirements information. Make sure the correct version for your device is selected (either Windows or Mac version). Click Install Now.

Step 4: The LockDown Browser installation file should download. Once completely downloaded, double-click the file and follow the prompts to install on your device.

Step 5: Once installed, you should see a LockDown Browser shortcut on your desktop. Double-click this shortcut to open the browser. (Mac users can find it in their Applications folder.)

Step 6: You will then be prompted to Choose Server. Select Stanly Community College Canvas. Click Ok. 

Possible Step 7: You may be prompted to close out other applications. Complete as requested. 

Step 8: You should then be directed to the SCC login page, where you will enter your SCC username (username@scc.stanly.edu) and password.

Step 10: You will now see your Canvas dashboard. Navigate to the course in Canvas and then to the quiz that requires Respondus LockDown Browser. Click Take the Quiz.

Step 11:   Once you have completed the quiz, you can then stop using Respondus LockDown Browser and access Canvas using your choice browser (i.e., Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc.).

If you have already installed Respondus LockDown Browser and are having issues accessing Canvas using this browser, please reinstall Respondus LockDown Browser on your device using the above steps.

Windows and Mac Users - New Quizzes in Canvas

Step 1: Navigate to the course in Canvas and then to the quiz that requires LockDown Browser. Click Take the Quiz.

Step 2: If this is the first time using LockDown Browser, click on the latest version link.

Step 3: You will be redirected to an installation page where you will see version/system information as well as system requirements information. Make sure the correct version for your device is selected (either Windows or Mac version). Click Install Now.

Chromebook Users (non-Stanly Community College-issued Chromebooks)

Installation of LockDown Browser for a Chromebook is as follows:
 

Step 1:  Log in to the Chromebook and launch Google Chrome.

Step 2:  Log in to Canvas and navigate to the quiz that requires LockDown Browser.

Step 3: Select the link for downloading and installing LockDown Browser.

Step 4:  From the Chrome web store, select Add to Chrome to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

Step 5:  An "Add LockDown Browser?" pop-up window will display. Select Add Extension.

Step 6:  Restart your Chromebook.

Step 7:  Log in to Canvas and navigate back to the quiz that requires LockDown Browser. The LockDown Browser extension will be started automatically when an assessment requires it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.

Chromebook Users (Stanly Community College-issued Chromebooks)

Step 1:  Log in to the device using the guest access.  

Step 2:  Launch Google Chrome and navigate to Canvas. Locate your course and the quiz and begin your quiz. LockDown Browser will automatically launch when the quiz attempt is started.

Step 3:  After submitting the quiz, exit LockDown Browser. 

Limitations and/or know issues with LockDown Browser for Chromebook

• LockDown Browser’s Calculator and Spreadsheet features aren’t currently supported.

• The extended keyboard functions (for adding symbols and special characters) aren’t currently available.

• LockDown Browser’s “Help Center” is currently unavailable, and there is no Live Chat support for students taking exams that require Respondus Monitor.

• "Allow access to specific external web domains" option is currently not supported.

• “Google Chrome OS can’t open this page” error will occur if on older versions of ChromeOS. Our testing shows that after upgrading to ChromeOS 100.0.4896.82, the error no longer occurs.
